Facebook, NABJ Partner to Promote Diversity in Fact-Checking Industry with New Fellowship

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is proud to announce a new partnership with the Facebook Journalism Project to launch a fact-checking fellowship.

The Facebook Journalism Project will provide funding for nine (9) emerging journalists recruited by NABJ to participate in full-time, paid, year-long fellowships. The goal of the fellowship program is to help support diversity within the fact-checking industry by recruiting more Black journalists into this critical space. Applications are available here.

“NABJ is proud to partner with the Facebook Journalism Project and our host organizations to offer our members an impactful opportunity to help diversify the fact-checking sector of the news industry,” said Dorothy Tucker, NABJ President. “Now more than ever, with misinformation on the rise, it is important that Black journalists play a role in ensuring that factual information is reported not only about our communities, but also the policies, people and decisions that impact us on an everyday basis. As we have always said at NABJ, diversity and inclusion must be a priority in all spaces of America’s newsrooms. This fellowship has the potential to help lead the industry in pivoting toward making this a reality.”

Selected fellows will be assigned to newsrooms across the U.S. that are IFCN-certified, fact-checking organizations. These include:

– PolitiFact – Washington, D.C. and St. Petersburg, FL

-The Associated Press (AP) – New York, NY

– Reuters – New York, NY

– USA TODAY – McLean, VA

– FactCheck.org – Philadelphia, PA

– The Dispatch – Washington, D.C.

– Agence France-Presse (AFP) – Washington, D.C.

– Lead Stories (Full-time remote position)

– Check Your Fact – Washington, D.C.

“One of the ways we support the fact-checking ecosystem is through fellowship programs in partnership with organizations around the world,” said Keren Goldshager, of Facebook’s Integrity Partnerships. “We’re excited to partner with the National Association of Black Journalists in the U.S. to help promote diversity within the fact-checking industry.”

Throughout the program, fellows will participate in virtual training sessions, including courses on data analytics for investigative journalism by CrowdTangle, Facebook’s powerful social analytics tool. The fellowship will also include networking events to aid professional development.
