NABJ Announces Bryan Monroe Memorial Scholarship Program

The NABJ Bryan Monroe Memorial Scholarship Program will award $5,000 scholarships to two college students — one for each person — who aspire to eventually become newsroom managers, such as editors and news directors.

Applicants must be college sophomores, juniors or seniors majoring in journalism or related fields. They also must be current members of NABJ and have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Students are asked to submit the following to NABJ via the application found here.

The application period opens on December 9, 2021. The application deadline is Feb. 28, 2022. Scholarship winners will be announced in April 2022.

The scholarship funds will be sent directly to the two winning students, who should use the money to help pay for tuition, books or other needs directly related to their education.

The scholarship program is named in honor of educator, longtime journalist and media trailblazer Bryan Monroe, who died at age 55 on Jan. 13, 2021.

He was the 16th president of NABJ, serving from 2005 to 2007.

He formerly served as the Washington editor of opinion and commentary at CNN, editor of CNNPolitics.com, and vice president and editorial director of EBONY and JET magazines.
