National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) President Ken Lemon has appointed Jasmine Styles to serve on the Board of Directors as the organization’s new Treasurer. Styles, an award-winning journalist, is the evening anchor at WCPO 9 News in Cincinnati. Her one-year appointment is effective immediately.
“It is with great pride that I welcome Jasmine to the Board of Directors. I have watched her career blossom from an NABJ student to a respected member and industry professional and observed how she has served our organization with great passion,” said Lemon. “As the former president of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists, her leadership skills have been impressive, and I am excited about her future contributions to our Board.”
Styles is an Orlando native who received her Bachelor’s in Communications from Florida State University in 2012. She minored in Journalism through a co-op program with Florida A&M University. Through the FAMU co-op, she became a participant in NABJ’s multimedia short course for college students. As a result of her training, she became a devoted member of NABJ and landed her first job as a multimedia journalist at the CBS affiliate in Columbia, South Carolina. While there, Styles covered the Charleston Church Massacre and South Carolina’s removal of the Confederate flag from State House grounds.
After her time in South Carolina, Styles moved to Beaumont, Texas, working as a full-time evening anchor. She started a reporting franchise called “Education Matters” and organized three live debates in contentious Sheriff races, which earned her a Southeast Texas Press Award. In August 2017, she was a part of the anchor team providing wall-to-wall coverage as Hurricane Harvey hit Southeast Texas.
From Texas, Styles returned to her home state of Florida, working for ABC Action News in Tampa for four years. She provided special coverage when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV. She was also chosen to craft a story for a one-hour special shown on Florida Scripps stations called “Race Relations: Shining a Light Across Florida.”
Styles’ appointment fills one of two vacant seats on the Board of Directors after the 2023 NABJ Elections, completed during NABJ’s Annual Convention in August.
