The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) will welcome U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to its annual convention and career fair during a special fireside chat on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at 3 p.m. in Birmingham, Alabama.
Cardona will be in conversation with award-winning political journalist Errin Haines, whose work focuses on issues of race, gender and politics. Haines, a longtime NABJ member, is a Founding Mother and Editor at Large for The 19th, a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom. She is also an MSNBC Contributor.
Cardona was sworn in as the 12th U.S. Secretary of Education on March 2, 2021.
Secretary Cardona is one of three children whose grandparents moved from Puerto Rico in the 1960s for better opportunities in the mainland United States. That experience, and his bicultural upbringing, have helped shape Secretary Cardona’s passion to serve all students and improve their opportunities for success. Secretary Cardona’s focus throughout his career on raising the bar for equity and excellence in education for all learners guides his leadership of the U.S. Department of Education.
In keeping with the convention’s theme, “From Revolution to Evolution,” the conversation, which will also include a Q&A session with journalists attending the convention, will address issues within the education sector facing the Black community and beyond.

NABJ’s convention has gathered more than 3,500 journalists in Birmingham to participate in more than 200 sessions and events focusing on journalism training and education, innovation and technology, social justice and economic opportunity, and health and community.
The organization has over 4,000 members and focuses on developing the next generation of journalists, providing training and skills for career advancement, and advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion in the news and media industries.
