I am impressed with The Daily Northwestern Editor Troy Closson’s efforts to manage the recent backlash of his paper’s coverage of the Jeff Sessions event and protests. I doubt he will make the same mistakes again, and that’s okay — that’s how we grow. I have encouraged Troy to make the best use of this lesson and to continue his journey. He is obviously passionate about journalism. This moment also encourages us all to ensure students continue to get the training and mentorship they need to know how to navigate such situations.
I also applaud Medill Dean Charles Whitaker for supporting student media and encouraging the students to embrace and grow in their craft.
