The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is disgusted by the allegations of harassment, gender discrimination, and gender-based pay disparities detailed in a lawsuit filed by former employees of the Black News Channel (BNC). Our Board members have spoken with current and former employees of BNC who corroborate many of the disturbing claims playing out in the court system. NABJ calls for immediate change within the culture of the organization.
NABJ is committed to fighting for equitable treatment of Black journalists in any media organization. Every day, Black journalists and journalists worldwide have to fight against unequal pay, unfair treatment and discrimination. It is disappointing that Black journalists are also reporting these issues in a news organization positioned as dedicated to the Black community.
In a statement, BNC said, “We have investigated each of these claims thoroughly and will soon be filing our motion to dismiss based on several grounds.”
BNC has agreed to meet with our Board pending the finalization of a scheduling date.
NABJ calls for an end to these alleged practices and implores the leadership at BNC to take immediate steps to remedy any disparities that exist in the news organization.
