NABJ has a robust scholarship program that has been operational for many years. Its purpose is to help provide education and training to prospective candidates. The process through which scholarships are awarded is solely determined by NABJ though NABJ welcomes donor collaboration on suggested models for scholarship fund dissemination. NABJ disburses scholarship grants made payable to the educational institution and can be used to defray educational expenses such as tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment required for study
PERSONAL SCHOLARSHIP
(Definition: A “Personal Scholarship” is a scholarship named after an individual in recognition of his or her accomplishments in the media industry. A scholarship recipient is awarded the scholarship based on pre-determined criteria jointly determined by NABJ and the scholarship donor.)
Personal Scholarship Requirements
- NABJ requires a minimum of $10,000 in initial funding
- The scholarship’s name will be branded as “NABJ’s ( Individual’s name) Scholarship.” For example, if John Doe wanted to name a scholarship, it would be named “NABJ’s John Doe Scholarship.”
- Minimum per recipient disbursement of scholarship funds will be $2000 (Two thousand dollars)
- A one-time administrative fee of 10% will be charged to the scholarship account
If the balance of the personal scholarship fund at any point goes below $5000 (five thousand dollars) the donor or donor advised contributor must deposit enough funds within 6 months of such occurrence to go above the $5000 threshold. If such threshold is not met within the prescribed time-period, all scholarship funds are required to be expended by the end of the NABJ national convention to designated scholarship recipient(s) as required by criteria. The disbursement will be treated as the final disbursement and closing of the scholarship fund. If donor(s) desire to reopen the scholarship in the funds name, a $10,000 initial funding will be required.
