December 12, 2025

With care and deep respect for our NABJ family, we share some important news regarding the NABJ 50th Anniversary Gala, originally scheduled for December 13, 2025, in Washington, D.C.

After thorough evaluation and discussion, the President and Chair have determined that, due to fiduciary responsibilities and the realities of the current economic climate, it is in the best interest of the organization to postpone the gala. This decision was not made lightly, as we fully recognize the anticipation and excitement surrounding this historic celebration.

As we reflect on this moment, we are reminded that NABJ’s strength has always come from its people — the journalists, students, educators, and allies who have carried our mission forward for half a century. Our story is one of resilience, advocacy, and excellence, and that story cannot be contained in a single evening. It lives in every newsroom where our members break barriers, in every classroom where the next generation is inspired, and in every community where our voices continue to make an impact.

This year, we have already witnessed extraordinary celebrations of NABJ’s 50th Anniversary. From the great celebratory events at our Cleveland convention, to the overwhelming success of our documentary, Beyond the Headlines: The NABJ Journey, to the insightful anniversary webinar hosted in partnership with the Poynter Institute, NABJ has been uplifted and honored in powerful ways. The generosity of donations helped ensure the success of our celebrations in Cleveland, and for that, we are deeply thankful.

And most of all, we pause with heartfelt gratitude to thank our founders, whose vision and foresight gave birth to this great institution and set the foundation for the legacy we now celebrate.

While the gala will not take place as originally planned, our commitment to honoring NABJ’s incredible 50 years of Resilience, Advocacy, Excellence, and the Evolution of Our Voices remains steadfast. We encourage all members, partners, and supporters to continue celebrating this milestone throughout the year — in your newsrooms, classrooms, communities, and chapters. The impact of NABJ is not confined to one night, but is reflected in the powerful legacy we continue to build together.

Looking ahead, we remain optimistic about rescheduling the gala in 2026 and finding other opportunities to extend the celebration of NABJ’s 50th Anniversary. Our mission continues, and so does the spirit of this golden milestone.

We want to sincerely thank every member, volunteer, and the entire 50th Anniversary Committee who worked tirelessly to make our anniversary year so special. Your support, energy, and love for this organization are what make NABJ strong and ensure that our mission will continue to thrive for the next 50 years and beyond.

With gratitude and appreciation,

Errin Haines
