For 25 years, the San Diego Association of Black Journalists (SDABJ) has supported the next generation of journalists by providing financial assistance, mentorship, and opportunities for aspiring media professionals. Since our creation in February 2000, we have awarded more than $80,000 in scholarships to high school, community college, and university students who excel academically and believe in SDABJ’s mission of bridging the gap between African Americans and the media.

Since its founding on Feb. 1, 2000, SDABJ has sent more than 50 students to college to pursue their dreams of getting a degree in journalism, communications or public relations. Some of the students have gone on to work at outlets such as Wired Magazine, The New York Times, and local newsrooms in San Diego and across the country.

As we celebrate our milestone year, we are excited to host our 2025 Scholarship & Anniversary Reception on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the University Club Atop of Symphony Towers. This

special evening will recognize outstanding students, highlight our organization’s impact, and feature an inspiring keynote address from CNN’s multi-award-winning Senior National Correspondent and Co-Anchor of CNN News Central, Sara Sidner.
