Update: NABJ Fact Check for Conversation With Vice President Harris in Philadelphia and Panel Info

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, at WHYY Studios in Downtown Philadelphia, Vice President Kamala Harris will be interviewed by a panel of three National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) members. 

• Gerren Keith Gaynor, White House Correspondent and Managing Editor of Politics at theGrio
• Eugene Daniels, Playbook Co-author and White House Correspondent for POLITICO
• Tonya Mosley, Co-host of WHYY’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and Tonya Mosley

The event will be livestreamed for all NABJ members and the general public to access at 2:30 p.m. EDT on NABJ’s Facebook and YouTube channels and WHYY’s platforms. An in-person audience of NABJ professional and student members and local HBCU journalism and communications students will be hosted at the studio.

“We look forward to our members and student journalists hearing from Vice President Harris as our panel asks the tough questions that are most pressing to the communities served by NABJ members,” said NABJ President Ken Lemon. 

He added, “As we have always stated, NABJ does not endorse political candidates as a journalism organization. Just as we demonstrated during our Convention interview with former President Trump, this event will not be a campaign rally but will be handled with respect to journalistic principles. The interview with Vice President Harris is designed to inform the public and give our members access to help inform their reporting. It is our hope that this event will also help provide real-time training for our emerging storytellers. We are thrilled we were able to work with the Harris team to deliver an in-person interview as we did with her opponent.”

This will be Harris’ second time appearing at an NABJ event. She addressed NABJ’s virtual convention in 2021.

Former Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton have attended NABJ conventions in person, either as presidents or presidential candidates. President Biden also participated in an interview, which included NABJ member panelists during a virtual convention in 2020 as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Gerren Keith Gaynor is a White House Correspondent and the Managing Editor of Politics at theGrio. He has covered the Biden administration, with a specific focus on Vice President Kamala Harris, since the inauguration. Since joining POLITICO in 2018, he’s covered the midterms, the Democratic presidential primary and general election through print, video journalism, podcasts, and live events. During the country’s reckoning with race in 2020, Eugene moderated POLITICO’s Confronting Inequality Town Hall. He is also a senior MSNBC political analyst. 

Tonya Mosley is an Emmy award-winning journalist and the co-host of WHYY’s Fresh Air. Previously, she was the co-host of NPR’s midday program Here & Now, where she led daily coverage during the Trump administration, the pandemic, and the racial reckoning of 2021. On January 6, 2021, she hosted live NPR special coverage of the insurrection as it was happening. Before radio, Mosley worked as a producer, reporter, anchor, and correspondent for various outlets, including NBC and Al Jazeera America.
