The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) joins the nation and the world in mourning the passing of the Reverend Jesse Jackson, a towering figure in the global struggle for civil rights, economic justice, political empowerment and human dignity.
Reverend Jackson challenged systems, confronted injustice, and called America to live up to its promises. He understood that access to power begins with access to truth, and that the stories we tell about our communities shape the future we are allowed to build.
Jackson was not only a civil rights icon; he was a steadfast supporter of Black journalists and of NABJ. Over the years, he participated in our conventions, stood alongside our presidents and members, and affirmed the vital role that Black media plays in holding power accountable and uplifting our communities. He knew that journalism is not separate from justice; instead, it is one of its greatest instruments.
In this moment, we are called to amplify new voices and ensure that the next generation of Black journalists carries forward the courage, conviction and clarity of our predecessors.
As we honor Jackson’s life, NABJ recommits to protecting and advancing Black journalism because truth-telling is a form of advocacy, and democracy depends on it.
