NABJ Speaks Out on NBC Layoffs Eroding Diverse Voices

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) stands firmly with the Baltimore Association of Black Journalists (BABJ) as we review serious concerns raised by current and former WJZ-TV journalists. BABJ has received detailed documentation alleging workplace inequities, retaliation, inconsistent management practices and a harmful culture that has particularly impacted Black journalists. NABJ is now examining these materials to fully understand the scope of the issues and determine the most effective path forward.
As our industry faces unprecedented challenges, from layoffs and consolidations, to the rollback of DEI efforts, Black and BIPOC journalists continue to be disproportionately impacted. That is exactly why our commitment to advocating for equity and protecting our members’ dignity and careers remains unwavering.
NABJ is actively assessing the information provided and will continue to work closely with BABJ to determine appropriate next steps. We stand with the journalists who have spoken up, and we will remain vigilant in advocating for accountability, equity, and fair treatment in every newsroom.
Like BABJ, our message is clear: Silence is not safety. Change is necessary, and NABJ is here to help drive it.
