Shirley Carswell Named Executive Director of the Dow Jones News Fund

The Dow Jones News Fund announced the appointment of Shirley Carswell, NABJ member, former NABJ interim executive director, distinguished journalist, and educator, as executive director of the Fund, effective Jan. 4.

Carswell spent 25 years with The Washington Post, where she was elevated to deputy managing editor. For the past seven years, she has served as a professor at Howard University’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications.

Carswell was an intern at the Hartford Courant in the Fund’s editing internship program in the 80s. She will be the first alum to lead DJNF.

She serves on the board of directors of Inside Climate News and Power Shift Project, a Freedom Forum Institute program.
